Slipknot Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

Joey Interview
This is for you Ravi!

May 04, 2004 - Everybody's favorite Des Moines, Iowa bred masked marauders of metal, Slipknot, are a busy bunch of sonic heathens.

In the interim, drummer #1 (aka Joey Jordison) graciously agreed to be subjected to our pithy "11 Questions." What follows are his unadulterated answers.

1) Who is your favorite superhero or super villain and why?

Joey: The only one that I can really think of right now, that just comes to the top of my head, is "The Hitchhiker" from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

2) What is your favorite late night snack when you're in the studio or out on tour and why?

Joey: I don't like sweets at all, so it's generally something like cold steak.

3) Who or what are your non-musical influences and why?

Joey: Non-musical? I would pretty have much say that I was raised by my mom and my dad, so they were pretty influential in the way I ended up turning out.

4) What is the motto you live by?

Joey: "Always strive to learn everything, even though you probably won't, you should always strive to anyway."

5) Which do you prefer, performing music live or creating it in the studio and why?

Joey: That's an absolute toss-up. I could never tell you. I'm one of the guys in the band who loves the studio. I'm the first one and the last one to leave. But then nothing beats the feeling of playing live.

6) Do you remember the first concert you ever went to?

Joey: Yeah, it was KISS with King Cobra opening. It was the Asylum Tour.

7) Do you remember the first album you ever bought? And was it on CD, vinyl, cassette or 8-track?

Joey: KISS Alive on cassette.

8) Name a musician that you've always wanted to work with but haven't yet and why.

Joey: Mike Patton.

9) If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Joey: Oh manif there's only one thing I could change? I'd like to end the musical piracy that's going on right now.

10) What has been your most important professional accomplishment to date?

Joey: The current record that we've just made and which no one's heard yet, I'd have to say.

11) What has been your most memorable or most fucked-up gig to date and why?

Joey: Aw, man, the most fucked-up one that there ever was--and I kinda almost don't like to say anything, because it was horriblewe were playing in Hamburg, Germany and we had this idea. We'd never played the actual song "Iowa" off of Iowa, the title track, which is the last song on the record. We'd never played it live, so we were gonna do a half-hour version of it. So we got drunk and fucked-up before we did it because the song's really mental and it's really syrupy and sh!t. And then at the very end, though, we got cold feet and decided to do the whole set. But by that time Corey was so fucked-up he couldn't remember the words to any of the songs. So it was just a horrible fuckin' show. He was soooo drunk, dude. I mean we were all - I mean I stopped drinkin' once I knew we were gonna be changing the set, so I was alright and everyone else was alright, but our singer was fuckin' ripped. He had like no fuckin' shoes on and between songs he'd say the stupidest sh!t 'cause he didn't even know where he was. The thing that sucks the most is that we let them [the fans] down. It just really sucked because those kids had been waitin' a long time to see us and they fuckin' come to see us and we just completely blow. It wasn't good. So when we go back to Hamburg this time around, we're definitely gonna fuckin' school it, pay 'em back, you know?
